About
#slash-pageHi. I'm Kelvin Cuesta and everyday I wake up feeling blessed that I am healthy, I have wonderful people in my life, and get to learn something new every day.
I was born in 1996 in Queens, NY. I have Dominican roots and learned Spanish as my first language. I love my family, crazy as they are, and my parents worked hard to afford the opportunities and the life I live today.
I went to public school until high-school where I was afforded a top education and change of pace at a private boarding school in Delaware. If you've seen Dead Poets Society, you've seen my campus.
I went to Wesleyan University where I studied History and Economics. I had a blast and remember my time fondly. Met most of my friends here, for that I will always hold a special place in my heart for Wes.
I wanted to be a lawyer and meandered my way to a white-shoe law firm. I hated the work there. I left with a respect for the work the lawyers were doing. Importantly, it was here that I found my passion for coding.
Since then, I've been a Software Engineer and loving every minute of it. I've tried to do some good in the world by sticking to industries I think need active intervention like the climate or healthcare. I pride myself in being full-stack and having a holistic view of software. In my free time I dabble with Haskell and also trying to ease my way into lower level languages like Go and C. I was a VSCode stan, but find myself reaching for Vim and the Jetbrains suite for more involved work.
In my free time, I'm a cinephile. Some of my favorite films include Tenet, There Will Be Blood, and Cure. I love traveling, particularly cities with history, or modern marvels like Tokyo. I'm torn about my travel habits due to climate concerns, but I try to remember I wasn't afforded the same opportunities to travel; I grew up poor.
I pick up a new hobby every week. I used to hate that about me, but now realized it's who I am and I wouldn't have it any other way. Life is never boring now.
I could go on and on about other hobbies like film photography or the countless hours grinding the competitive Street Fighter 6 ladder, or how I hacked my PSP to pirate games as a broke kid who could not afford to buy games (don't worry I do now), but I'll leave that for another day.
If you got this far, thank you!
Cheers,
Kelvin
